Everyone understands the importance of safety But may not fully understand what safety features to look out for.

The year 2019 brought along plenty of innovations in the automotive industry. These innovations have pushed the development of hybrid and all-electric cars that have allowed them to be mass-produced and commercially available. New car brands like Tesla have pushed the envelope by being able to develop and sell all-electric cars forcing big car brands like Ford and Chevrolet to develop their own eco-friendly cars. The development of a more eco-friendly and sustainable powerplant for vehicles has also improved the passive and active safety features and technology that is incorporated into the design and production of new vehicles in 2019.

Who Rates the Safety of Vehicles?

eZhire Car Hire Blog

The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) evaluates the two major aspects of vehicle safety, crashworthiness, and crash avoidance and mitigation. The two represent the active and passive safety features that are built into the design of the car like how well the car can protect the vehicle’s occupants in the event of a crash or how the active and passive features can prevent a crash or lessen its severity.

The IIHS conducts tests to evaluate the vehicle’s crashworthiness through six tests like moderate overlap front, driver-side small overlap, side, rood strength, and head restraints & seats. The IIHS also conducts evaluations of the headlight system and child seat attachment points.

Frontal Crash Test

The Frontal Crash test is one of the deadliest types of a crash that results in fatalities and the IIHS allocates a large part of its program in determining the crashworthiness of vehicles in terms of frontal crashes like the moderate overlap test, driver-side small overlap test, and the passenger-side overlap test.

In the moderate overlap frontal test, a vehicle is tested by crashing in a deformable2 feet tall barrier face made of aluminum honeycomb. 40 percent of the total width of the vehicles strikes the barrier on the driver side. The forces involved in the crash test is similar to two vehicles with the same weight colliding. The test finds out if the car’s crumple zones can dissipate the impact without penetrating the safety cage. The test is also designed to determine if the safety belts and airbags can safely restrain passengers during rapid deceleration.

The Driver-side small overlap frontal test is designed to replicate what happens when the front left corner of a vehicle strikes an object that will send the occupants forward and sideward. The test vehicle travels at 40 mph to a 5-foot tall rigid barrier and 25 percent of the total width of the vehicle strikes the barrier on the driver side.  The Passenger-side overlap frontal test is also similar to the driver-side small overlap but focuses on the integrity of the passenger safety zone on the passenger side.

Side Crash Test

Side collisions or crashed account for a least a quarter of passenger vehicle occupant deaths in the United States. The Side Crash Test aims to measure how well the passive and active safety features and design of the vehicle like side airbags and side beams can protect the occupants during side collisions.

Roof Strength Test

Roof Strength Test aims to determine if the structural integrity of the roof can protect occupants from injury during rollovers resulting from collisions or mishandling of the vehicle. Roof integrity and strength are essential to minimize fatality and injury during rollover crashes because weak roofs tend to buckle inwards and make physical contact with passengers inside the vehicle causing injury.

Head Restraints and Seats

The Head Restraints and Seats are designed to minimize injuries caused by sudden declaration and impact. This test focuses on injuries that are caused by rear-end collisions that can result in whiplash related injuries.
