The Arabian Wildlife Center in Sharjah
The Arabian Wildlife Center is the only ‘zoo’ in Arabia which has all the animals naturally occurring in the Arabian Peninsula, including both types current and extinct. It opened in Sharjah in September 1999, there are over 100 species, residing in a safe, spacious and natural surroundings. This center demonstrates the diversity of the fauna found in the peninsula and it is a good source for knowledge of the species among visitors. It is better to take some time to view the video just inside the main entrance, before entering the display area. You will start your visit through the reptile, insects and fish house, here you will see a huge number of Arabian snakes including the venomous adders and vipers, as well as chameleons and Lizards and common insect types like scorpions and camel spiders.
There is a bird aviary set in a wadi and desert environment which contains different species of songbirds, flamingos, Indian Roller birds, Houbara and Bustard. Don’t forget to Look out for the Rock Hyrax basking on top of the rocks. These brown creatures are tailless and their size is near about a rabbit, they have only three toes on each foot and surely it will be a surprise for you to know that their closest living relative is the elephant. Within the aviary’s walk-through-cave, there is a tank which contains a blind cave fish, from Oman. These fish are born with eyes, but because of their naturally dark habitat environment, they do not develop and end up like a pinprick on adult fish. There are also small desert cats, houses of the small cats are found on the side of the aviary; the Caracal, recognized by the tufts on the end of its ears, this Wildcat looks very similar to a local cat and petite, this cat is called small shy Sand Cat.
The nocturnal house is next, having a wonderful variety of mammals including three species of fox, hedgehogs, porcupines, mongoose, and twelve rodent species, in their favored habitat. This amazing zoo has a huge and beautiful variety of the wolves, baboons, cheetah, hyena and unique captivating Arabian leopards.
