Dubai Museum


It is the main oldest museum in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It is situated in the Al Fahidi Fort which was built in 1787. The Dubai museum was allowed to open by the Ruler of Dubai in the year of  1971, with the purpose to present the traditional and cultural way of life in the Emirate of Dubai. , visitors can see the fort constructed and the different displays inside the Museum. From the fort, they can see a path to the galleries, which shows the common culture of the land of 1800 century. It contains local antiques and artifacts traded with Dubai from African and Asian countries. There are several dioramas which shows life in the emirate before the advent of oil, in addition to artifacts from recent discoveries as old as 3000 BC.

In 2007 Dubai Museum welcomed near about 1,800 visitors on daily basis, with a yearly total of 611,840. In March 2008, 80,000 visitors visited the Museum. The most popular times are from August to April. The Museum welcomed over 1 Million Visitors in the year of 2011.

Al Fahidi Fort was built in certain phases. The oldest tower of the Museum was built in 1787 and it is the oldest building in Dubai that still exists and is in good condition.


Al Fahidi Fort is in square-shape by occupying three of its corners. It was built of mortar and coral rock in several phases. The southern wall lies the remains of the city walls. Next to them stands traditional boat (tall dough) in the middle of a large courtyard which covers the underground galleries. Two cannons guard the main gate to the fort on the eastern wall, adorned by flags of Dubai and the United Arab Emirates.


Internal halls line three of the fort walls. One hall is at the main gate and houses the ticket office, while the others consist of the old collection of weapons and arms from different historical periods with a model of the city in 1820 AD. Traditional musical instruments are also displayed next to a video of folkloric music.


The central Courtyard is in the surrounding of the hall. You can find bronze cannon with cannonballs and different types of the boats. In the corner, a traditional summer house called Arish stands. The Arish is made from weaved palm fronds. It comprises sleeping and seating areas,  also a kitchen which is filled with household objects and furnishings which shows the past culture of locals. The Arish features the unique wind tower design which was used for air conditioning in the pre-electricity days.
